Ferdowsi Mausoleum in Tos, 20 kilometers northwest of Mashhad, is the burial place of Hakim Abolqasem Ferdowsi, an Iranian epic poet and the creator of the Shahnameh. This building, which was commissioned in 1313, is one of the most magnificent tombs in Iran and a symbol of the greatness of Iranian culture and history.

Tomb architecture:

Ferdowsi Mausoleum was built based on the design of Karim Taherzadeh Behzad and supervised by Hoshang Sihun. This building is made of white marble and has a tall and turquoise dome. On the exterior of the tomb, there are statues of characters from the Shahnameh, such as Rostam, Zal, Fereydon and Kikhosro.

Different parts of the tomb:

  • Tomb Building: The main building of the tomb consists of a large hall and a dome. Ferdowsi’s grave is located in the middle of the hall.
  • Museum: In the tomb area, there is a museum where a copy of Shahnameh and other works of Ferdowsi, historical objects as well as paintings and sculptures of Shahnameh characters are displayed.
  • Library: The library of Ferdowsi Mausoleum has an exquisite collection of Persian and foreign books in various fields.
  • Garden: Ferdowsi’s tomb area has a large and green garden where there are all kinds of trees and flowers.
